Something happened over the last week. I think the key was Lasse winning NYC Marathon ticket and the weather turning into spring mode. Wanted to show a proof to myself I can still hit it after a long hiatus and leg issues. Went to home 1K stretch to learn the basics. First time 2K in 6.41 and that was it. Couldn’t even start the second one. Two days after 6.39 and 6.33. No more, third one had to quit. Then a 8 minute push around Mankkaa Golf Course, with half point reached in 6.30, but not able to complete yet. Now the other day a single 1K in 2.59,5! Also a sprint on top of Vehkamäki in 49,7. At least reasonable speed is still there. The rest is just hard work.
When air quality indexes hit well below 50 and went green this Sunday morning I took the chance to find out what HK Trail looks like. First time I run outside in Greater China and it was well worth it. Started out from Wan Chai, went up Kennedy Road — Bowen Road — Wan Chai Gap — Coombe Road — Barker Road (turned back at some point) — Peak Road — then down on Aberdeen Reservoir Road — back up HK Trail — and down Wan Chai Gap Road. Took like 1.5 hours total. Distance maybe 15K due to very hard uphill and downhill, including stairs where running was really tough. Great scenery and visions to both sides, HK Bay & Pacific. Gave the idea there is so much to see just in HK. You only need to win the perfect day and hit it out running. I didn’t see too many other runners, especially on hills and unpaved trail there was nobody in running gear. People do go out though, but mostly with kids and dogs.
— In other running related new the other day managed a full 1K at 3.00/km pace on Humble House treadmill in Taipei. Felt like I’m on the way to getting back in shape.
I had been mentally down for a month, basically since recovered from the flu. Couldn’t do more than occasional 5 to 10K runs. Yesterday went out with Vane to see the state of the union around Mankkaa golf course. 8 x 1K turned into 4 x 1K and 4 x c.750m. Set went like 3.29, 3.25, 3.29 (dropped already 100m behind), 3.32 all with 1 min breaks and the rest like 2.30 each with 3 mins breaks.
A long break in updates. Been busy with homebuilding, the usual company stuff, and in January got influenza. Finally recovered and yesterday night managed to run an okay 5K. Could I get into shape again before the summer? It’s a tall order to be able to do 20K+ runs and tempo at competitive speed. At least achilles and knee issues are history for now and running conditions are okay in southern Finland. The little snow and ice we had has pretty much melted away.
I am not fully sure anymore Android is the ultimate platform war winner. True, Apple is getting boring and Nokia left Microsoft alone with Windows. All the interesting stuff happens in the open Android world where you have huge growth and everything starts looking like the new normal. However, there are strange things ongoing like Google rebranding the whole thing without asking key partners and users apparently anything. Would you like to have a Samsung KitKat phone? This is how Google operates. My take is that there’s still room for a contender, which “does no evil.” Something like Google’s search engine used to be before it sold out.
