A man in full

I started the morning with a 5K road race around Perimeter Mall, Dunwoody. My time was quite exactly 17.00 and position among a few hundred runners 3rd. It was pretty good considering the temperature was close to 30 degrees celsius and humidity at tropical levels. Just didn’t make sense to run any faster. I don’t recall ever sweating more than I did today at the finishing line!

Looks good – first mile c. 5.10!

On the flight here and during the metro trip to the race and back I’ve been reading Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full. An excellent account of Atlanta region. This place is really crazy and now I mean the whole infrastructure, buildings and stuff like that. Built so recently. On the way back I visited Buckhead just to witness what he wrote.

As a sidenote, for some reason Wolfe fucks with Finland. One side character in the story is a girl from Helsinki. Her name is Sirja Tiramaki (first time I ever hear names like that; the first name is technically correct, the last name is not), her son is called Pietari Päivärinta (technically correct, but sounds like a really stupid name), and she works for a major Finnish department store chain Ragar (there is no such; we don’t even have that many department store chains in Finland). Yes, and she is Roman Catholic! (actually 99% of Finns who are church members belong to protestants; the rest are mainly Orthodox; Roman Catholics are foreigners). Finally they stay in that famous hotel Grand Tatar while in Helsinki… (first time I hear of it; only a russian immigrant could open a hotel with that sort of name in Helsinki).
