DRM – the final days of a three letter acronym

The days of “DRM” seem to be over. A press release from a major recording company talks about restrictions, calls for interoperability and touts for a free future. Choosing the words you use is essential. The talk about rights management and the protection of authors are no longer in fashion. Granted, it was all just pain at the user’s end…

A failed 10K on inva

A 10K at inva track in 36.15. This time alone at night. In short: a total failure. First two Ks in 3.36 and 3.37. Then on the third I had to stop to tie the strings on my shoe and at the same time the battery of my stopwatch died. Happily enough I had iPod running as well. But no splits anymore… The idea was to speed up towards the end. However, on Ks 8 and 9 I had to stop briefly and walk a few steps. My stomach tilted and requested a toilet trip… So with these three stops and general downgrading towards the end (not because of legs or anything like that) the 36.15 was an “ok” result.

Power song!

Thanks to Mika, my iPod can now empower me with the classic Urheiluruutu-theme from the 1980s! (Leevi and the Leavings: Tuhannen markan seteli). – I had a chat some 6-7 years ago with the guy from the Finland’s national broadcasting company responsible for replacing the classic. It was replaced by this guy’s own inferior composition. He apologized and I think it was sincere. The broadcasting company was about to save costs.

Who would join me if we’d start a campaign to put Leevi back in Ruutu!? Start with collecting names on the net etc.

Run today was 13K meaning 69K for the week. Last month c. 300K.

Chicago it is

Selecting the year’s marathon was in the end a simple process. This weekend we had the honour to host a visiting professor from Chicago. When he asked when I’m coming to pay a visit, the reply just came out: “So when do you have Chicago marathon?” – October 7. That day is the goal of this season.

I changed my plans a bit from what I thought last fall. There will be no spring marathon after all. Instead, I’ll take a few shorter races. I have scheduled a couple of road events as well as 3K and 10K on track before the end of May.

An orphan work on copyright

Made a major scanning and now I have important news for this blog’s Finnish readers: here’s a pdf-copy of T.M. Kivimäki’s seminal treatise on copyright. I have no idea who is the book’s current copyright holder. It was published in 1948 and has been out of print (and out from most libraries) for ages. However, I recommend everyone to take a look at the contents of the book. The main principles of copyright are clearly explained. Kivimäki himself thought that the essence of copyright is actually the inalienable personal side (“author’s rights”), not the economic components. A point worth thinking about when the so-called copyright industry keeps on claiming property-like ownership to human culture.
